Many studies have supported the validity of using assessment instruments to enhance professional judgment, and as a result, various structured risk assessment measures have been developed. These measures improve violence risk assessments by prompting clinicians to consider empirically supported factors for general or specific forms of violence.
In addition, research has demonstrated the predictive validity of multi-factor tools designed to assess violence risk; therefore, professionals are no longer required to rely on personal experience, intuition, or instinct.
