Effective or Not Effective? Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills in a Correctional Facility

 

“When safety concerns arise, correctional officers generally choose to use punishment strategies rather [than] rehabilitative strategies…Inmates experience numerous mental health symptoms during restrictive housing…Given these high levels of psychological symptoms and/or the need to avoid placing inmates in restrictive housing for engagement in undesirable behaviors, there has been great recognition regarding the importance of mental health treatment within the correctional system. One program developed for the prison system is the START NOW program. START NOW is a 32-session, 75-minute, twice weekly group therapy, based on skills developed through Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Linehan et al., 1991; Sampl et al., 2008."

You will also learn about a theoretical model clarifying when and why experts are protected against and when they are especially prone to bias. 

  • Methamphetamines: An Overview for Forensic Mental Health Professionals in partnership with the American Academy of Forensic Psychology (AAFP) | June 23rd | 4 Hours, 4 CEs: Learn about the history of psychostimulant use before taking a deep dive into the mechanism of action of these drugs. Start to understand these drugs' short- and long-term effects on cognition and behavior and the risk factors associated with adverse outcomes.

  • Conducting Work Product Reviews in Child Custody Litigation | July 14th | 3 Hours, 3 CEs: Over time, more and more mental health professionals  have been appointed by family court judges to conduct parenting plan evaluations. Litigants who are displeased with the evaluators’ analysis may challenge their advisory input by retaining a forensic mental health professional to review the evaluators’ work and, where appropriate, to assist the attorneys.

  • Dr. Martindale, PhD, ABPP, who has been conducting work product reviews for 34 years, will describe the review process from pre-retention contacts with attorneys through trial. Emphasis will be placed on procedures intended to minimize the objectivity-impairing influence of retention bias; the relevant ethical issues; the various types of litigation support services; and means by which testifying experts can maximize their helpfulness to the court.

You are invited to participate in an online survey examining how different risk communication methods influence risk assessment and management outcomes. Participants are asked to complete an anonymous, online survey that will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.

Forensic mental health professionals who have experience assessing and managing violence risk (e.g., psychologists, psychiatrists, parole/probation officers) are eligible to participate.

Sanam Monjazeb is a Ph.D. student in clinical-forensic psychology at Simon Fraser University. This survey is being conducted to fulfill dissertation requirements.
