Competency and Community – A Radical Alternative?

 

“Little is known about the outcomes and trajectories of accused persons who take part in fitness assessments and are then fount fit to stand trial. These individuals may have mental health, substance use, and other social service needs that are not addressed by a brief forensic assessment. 

 

One idea that has been proposed in our province is to connect this group with mental health resources during their involvement in the court process, through a mental health clinician who is based in the courtroom. Participants will learn to describe the neurobiopsychosocial factors that influence the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

  • Constitutional Criminal Mental Health Law: An Overview | June 12th | 4 Hours, 4 CEs: Forensic practice is governed and bound by legal doctrines. As such, forensic professionals need to be well-versed in these doctrines to maintain competence. Christopher Slobogin, J.D., LLM dives into this topic area, including surveying all-important Supreme Court opinions and a sampling of state and federal approaches to the issues. Suitable for beginners and advanced professionals alike, the program will give general context on relevant legal frameworks as well as dive into nuance on key legal rules.

  • Development of Self and Mind: A Comparison of Buddhist and Western Psychology | June 14th | 2 Hours, 2 CEs: Buddhism and Western psychology have a long and shared history, and their integration has positively impacted both disciplines. They share some key principles, including the importance of understanding the individual and their personal experience, the need for mindful and active engagement with the world around them, and the need to find ways to reduce suffering. Presented by Mark D. Stauffer, PhD, this program unpacks the Buddhist psychological and philosophical emphasis on the direct experience of self and "mind" and what that potentially holds for clinicians.

  • Responding to Concerns about the Work of other Professionals in Forensic Practice | June 16th | 3.5 Hours, 3.5 CEs: The right way to critically address concerns about the work of other professionals in adversarial proceedings isn’t always obvious. Randy Otto, PhD, will cover the basic principles that should guide psychologists when commenting on the assessment work of other professionals, including how to approach this process as well as relevant ethical obligations. This training program is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced-level clinicians who work at the intersection of clinical psychology and law.

  • Burnout, Vicarious Trauma, and Compassion Fatigue | June 20th | 3 Hours, 3 CEs: Compassion fatigue, burnout, and vicarious trauma are all illnesses experienced by professionals due to the highly demanding nature of their work, as they are constantly pushed to their limits. Jerrod Brown, Ph.D., is curating this program for all mental health professionals, and plans to examine the definitions, causes, and consequences associated with these topics. Prevention and intervention strategies will be discussed, and empirically based research findings will be included.
